Can ChatGPT convert PDF to Excel?
Updated October 2026
Yes, for a PDF that has a text layer: ChatGPT accepts PDF uploads and can build a table from them, but OpenAI's own help says it may not reliably extract exact values from scanned files or image-based tables. For scans, long PDFs and batches of files, a dedicated extractor such as DocTable is the more dependable route, and it can be used from inside ChatGPT or Claude. Your first 3 pages are free — scan and download, no card needed. After that, $3 buys 20 pages (one-time, no subscription). Try your first page without an account — sign in only to download it.
What each assistant documents
| PDF upload | Scanned pages / images in a PDF | Excel file out | |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Yes, Free and paid plans, plan limits apply | “may not reliably extract exact values” from scans; visual reading of PDFs is Enterprise only | Documented for ChatGPT Work; availability depends on plan and workspace |
| Microsoft Copilot | Yes, up to 20 files per conversation, 50 MB each | Not published | No PDF-to-Excel conversion published; Copilot in Excel can add data from PDF files in SharePoint or OneDrive |
| Claude | Yes, up to 20 files per chat, PDFs up to 1,000 pages | Text and visuals read in PDFs of 100 pages or fewer; text only above that | Yes, .xlsx, on Free and paid plans, 30 MB per file |
| DocTable | Yes, PDFs up to 500 pages, up to 100 files per upload | Every page is read as an image | Excel (.xlsx), Word, CSV, JSON; rows that do not add up are flagged |

ChatGPT: what OpenAI's help says
OpenAI lists PDF among the file types you can upload, on Free and paid plans, with plan-specific limits (documents up to 512 MB per file; free users are limited to 3 uploads a day). Its data analysis help lists PDFs as a supported input and mentions creating tables for row-by-row review.
Two limits decide whether it works for your file. First, outside Enterprise, ChatGPT uses text-based retrieval: it extracts digital text from the file rather than its embedded images, and visual retrieval for PDFs is currently exclusive to Enterprise. Second, OpenAI says ChatGPT may not reliably extract exact values from image-based tables, scanned files, or files with complex visual layouts, and advises uploading a spreadsheet or text-based file when exact values matter. Downloadable spreadsheets are documented for ChatGPT Work, with availability depending on plan, workspace settings, file type and surface.
Microsoft Copilot
Microsoft documents that Copilot apps accept PDF, DOCX, XLSX and PPTX files, up to 20 files in one conversation and 50 MB per file. Copilot in Excel can add data from files saved in SharePoint or OneDrive, PDF files included. The Android Microsoft 365 Copilot app has a Scan Table feature that works from a photo of a table and marks conversion errors with "Items need your review". Microsoft does not publish a PDF-to-Excel conversion feature as such, or anything about scanned PDFs.
Claude
Anthropic's help says Claude accepts up to 20 files per chat, with PDFs up to 1,000 pages, and analyses both text and visual elements in PDFs of 100 pages or fewer (text only for longer ones). Claude can create Excel spreadsheets (.xlsx) on Free and paid plans, up to 30 MB per file, and Anthropic's example is exactly this job: upload a PDF with tables and ask Claude to extract them into a spreadsheet.
When a dedicated extractor is the better choice
- Scans with no text layer. DocTable reads every page as an image, so a scanner output or phone photo is handled the same way as a digital PDF.
- Long PDFs. One file up to 500 pages, read in the background with a live page counter; each page uses 1 credit.
- Batches. Up to 100 files per upload. Files that hold the same kind of document are grouped into one Excel file with the same columns; different documents get separate files.
- Numbers you can trust. DocTable checks the arithmetic of the table it extracted — running balances, quantity × unit price, line items against the subtotal, subtotal + tax = total — and flags rows that do not add up in the preview and in the Excel file.
- No prompt to get right. No templates, no setup, and the same output shape every time.
When ChatGPT or Claude is the better choice
For a single digital PDF with a clean table, an assistant you already pay for is often enough — and it can also summarise, filter or chart the data in the same chat, which DocTable does not do. Check the row count and the totals against the PDF before you rely on the result.
Use DocTable from inside ChatGPT or Claude
DocTable runs as a remote MCP server at https://doctable.online/mcp, authenticated with your DocTable API key (Authorization: Bearer dt_…). Its extract_document tool takes a file URL or file content and returns JSON, Excel, Word or CSV, including an audit of the arithmetic and a human_review_required flag; 1 credit per page. Setup for ChatGPT, Claude and Cursor is on the developers page and the OCR MCP server page.
Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT convert PDF to Excel?
Yes, for PDFs with a text layer: OpenAI's help lists PDFs as an input for data analysis, and spreadsheet files are documented for ChatGPT Work. For scans, OpenAI says it may not reliably extract exact values.
Can ChatGPT convert a scanned PDF to Excel?
Not reliably, by OpenAI's own account: outside Enterprise it reads a PDF's digital text rather than its images, and it may not extract exact values from scanned files (OpenAI). DocTable reads every page as an image.
Can ChatGPT convert PDF bank statements to Excel?
It can try with a digital statement, but OpenAI's warning about exact values applies. DocTable checks the running balance on every row, flags rows that do not add up, and can also give a QuickBooks Online CSV (bank statement to Excel).
What is a good ChatGPT prompt to convert PDF to Excel?
Name the columns and forbid corrections, for example: “Extract every row of the table in this PDF into a spreadsheet with the columns Date, Description and Amount. Copy every number exactly as printed — do not correct, round or recalculate anything. Leave a cell empty if you cannot read it, and list the pages you could not read. Give me the result as an .xlsx file.” Then compare the row count and totals with the PDF.
Can Copilot convert PDF to Excel?
Microsoft does not publish a PDF-to-Excel conversion feature for Copilot. Copilot accepts PDF uploads, and Copilot in Excel can add data from PDF files saved in SharePoint or OneDrive.
Can Claude convert PDF to Excel?
Yes. Anthropic documents that Claude can create .xlsx files from an uploaded PDF on Free and paid plans, and reads text and visuals in PDFs of 100 pages or fewer.
Can I use DocTable inside ChatGPT?
Yes, in a client that supports remote MCP servers: add https://doctable.online/mcp with your DocTable API key, and the extract_document tool returns Excel, Word, CSV or JSON. Setup is on the developers page.
