DocTable

Handwritten table to Excel — handwriting OCR for forms and logs

Updated October 2026

DocTable reads a photo or scan of a handwritten table, form or tally sheet and returns an Excel sheet with the rows and columns as written, so a paper log or survey form becomes cells you can sort and sum. Handwriting accuracy has not been measured yet: neat print works best, and cursive, crossed-out or squeezed entries are where it fails, so check every value against the page. Your first 3 pages are free — scan and download, no card needed. After that, $3 buys 20 pages (one-time, no subscription). Try your first page without an account — sign in only to download it.

How it works

  1. Photograph or scan the handwritten page — flat, evenly lit, the whole table in frame.
  2. Upload it; the rows and columns are read as written.
  3. Check every value against the page in the preview.
  4. Download Excel or CSV — included in your 3 free pages.

What reads well, and where it fails

Neat, printed handwriting in a ruled table or a form with boxes reads best. Cursive, crossed-out values, entries squeezed into a margin and numbers written over each other are where errors appear — and an OCR error on handwriting can be a plausible-looking wrong number rather than an obvious blank. Handwriting accuracy has not been measured yet; DocTable's published 97.5% figure comes from typed documents only. Check every value against the page before you use the sheet.

Forms, logs and survey sheets

Paper forms, stock and tally logs, attendance sheets and survey forms all come back as rows and columns. Pages that hold the same kind of document are grouped into one Excel file, so a stack of the same survey form uploaded together comes back as one file, not one file per page. Up to 100 files go in one upload; batches need you to sign in.

Take a photo that can be read

Most handwriting failures start with the photo. Lay the page flat, use even light without glare or a shadow across it, fill the frame with the table, and send the full-resolution image rather than a thumbnail or a chat-app copy. A phone or computer browser is enough — there is no app to install.

Totals are checked

If the sheet has totals or a running balance, DocTable checks the arithmetic of what it read — quantity × unit price, line items against a subtotal, running balances — and flags the rows that do not add up in the preview and in the Excel file. A flagged row is the first place to look for a misread digit.

Notes rather than a table

For handwritten notes, letters or a page of text with no table, export Word or plain text instead of Excel — see handwriting OCR. For printed tables in a photo, see image to Excel.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a handwritten table to Excel?

Photograph or scan the page, upload it to DocTable and download the Excel file: the rows and columns come back as written. Check every value against the page, because handwriting accuracy has not been measured yet.

Can you convert handwriting to text in Excel?

Yes. Handwritten entries become cell text and numbers in an Excel sheet; neat print works best, and cursive, crossed-out or squeezed entries are where errors appear.

Can I turn handwritten forms into Excel?

Yes. A filled-in paper form comes back as fields and values in Excel, and several pages of the same form uploaded together are grouped into one Excel file.

Can it read paper survey forms?

Yes — a survey form is read like any other handwritten form, and a stack of the same form uploaded together (up to 100 files, signed in) comes back as one Excel file. Check the answers, since handwriting accuracy has not been measured.

How accurate is handwriting OCR?

Not measured yet. DocTable's published 97.5% comes from typed synthetic documents with no handwriting (see OCR accuracy); on handwriting expect more errors, mostly on cursive, crossed-out and squeezed entries.

Can I convert handwritten notes to text?

Yes. For notes rather than tables, export Word or plain text instead of Excel — see handwriting OCR.
