A JPG has no text layer — which changes the whole job
A digital PDF often carries selectable text underneath the page, so converting it is mostly a matter of re-reading data that is already there. A JPG carries nothing but pixels. Every character, every column boundary and every row break has to be recognised visually. That is why a general file converter typically returns an empty sheet from a photo, and why DocTable uses a vision model that looks at the page rather than a parser that looks for a text layer.
Photos, screenshots and resolution
Screenshots are the easiest input — sharp, flat, evenly lit. Phone photos work well when the table fills most of the frame and the page is roughly square to the camera. Resolution matters more than people expect: an image under 1100 pixels on its long side is automatically enlarged before the OCR call, because a vision model allocates its detail budget from the image dimensions, and too small an image is where confident misreading starts. Angle and glare are the other two things worth a second attempt.
