What gets extracted from a receipt
Receipts are shaped differently from invoices and are read that way. The merchant name, date and time, and payment method come back as fields; the purchased items become rows with description, quantity and price; tax lines, discounts, tips and the total are read as their own group rather than as extra items. Item names on a till receipt are often abbreviated or truncated by the printer — those are transcribed as printed, not guessed into full product names.
Thermal paper, curled edges and phone photos
Most receipts arrive as a photo of a small, glossy, curved strip rather than a flat scan. Images smaller than 1100 pixels on the long side are automatically enlarged before the OCR call, which measurably improves reading on small receipt photos. What no software can recover is ink that is no longer there: faded thermal paper, a crease straight through a total, or heavy glare will produce gaps or misreads. Verify amounts against the paper before filing an expense claim.
Batching a month of expenses
