Scanned or digital — one converter, one path
A PDF exported from a word processor and a PDF that is really a photographed or scanned page look identical to a file picker, but they need different engines to extract text reliably. DocTable does not ask which kind you have. Both go through the same vision-language OCR: it reads the page the way a person would, reconstructing paragraphs, headings and label/value fields rather than returning a wall of characters or, worse, embedding the original scan as a picture inside a Word file.
Word, not Excel — when it matters
Letters, contracts, memos and other continuous-text documents read badly as a spreadsheet grid. DocTable can suggest the export format from the shape of the document: prose becomes a Word file with structure intact; a page that is mostly a table is offered as Excel or CSV instead. You can always choose the format yourself on download.
What "editable" actually means here
The .docx you download opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice with real text you can select, correct and reformat — not a scanned image with an invisible text layer. Structure comes from the vision model's read of the page, not from a generic PDF-to-image-to-Word pipeline. Always proofread before legal, academic or client-facing use; OCR is strong on clear pages and weaker on heavy blur, dense stamps, or handwritten annotations.
Same product, same rules
Sign-in (Google or a verified email) is required before the first scan — there is no anonymous OCR. Processing is temporary; nothing is kept as a permanent document archive. Details: Security & data processing. If your PDF is a table rather than prose, PDF to Excel and PDF to CSV are the same engine aimed at spreadsheet output.
Frequently asked questions
Does this work on scanned PDFs, not just digital ones?
Yes. Scanned PDFs and digital PDFs go through the same vision OCR — there is no separate mode to pick.
Is the output an editable Word file?
Yes — a .docx with reconstructed paragraphs and fields, not a photo pasted into a blank document.
When would I want Excel instead of Word?
Letters, contracts and continuous text work best as Word. Tables and line-item data work best as Excel or CSV — DocTable can suggest a format from the document shape.
Is converting a PDF to Word free?
Sign-in is required before the first scan. Sign-in gives 10 free scans, then scans use paid credits. Downloading a result is free.
How accurate is the conversion?
Good on clear digital or scanned pages; weaker on heavy blur, dense stamps or handwriting — always proofread before legal or client use.
